Why are ESOPs not that effective in hiring/ retaining/ driving long term ownership?

Basis our last poll, it seems ESOPs don't help in driving long term team ownership. We at VenEx resonate with that & hence have been working on alternatives. Honestly all of them, but it's realistically about the person at the end of the day. Committed people make great participants in ESOP. Because great people build great companies. It's easy to sell ESOP when the valuation keeps going up.
