clearspace - Pushups to earn screen time

byā€¢

Clearspace now makes it harder to mindlessly scroll by charging an entrance fee for opening your apps - physical exercise. Unlock your apps with pushups, squats, or steps.

Thanks @mwseibel for hunting us! šŸ‘‹ Hey Product Hunt! (thanks for hunting us @mwseibel) I'm Oliver, one of the founders of Clearspace. Royce and I began building clearspace because we were tired of our phones taking us away from moments in life that mattered to us most. Our mission to create digital environments that work for us, and not the other way round. We're thrilled to launch a huge new piece of our offering, which lets you earn time on addicting apps with physical motion. How it works 1. Choose your exercise: pick between pushups, squats, or steps. This will be the exercise that you use to earn your time on apps you limit through Clearspace. 2. Choose your apps: The apps you'd like to use less of are up to you. Clearspace will gate those apps and require proof of motion to open them! 3. Choose your difficulty: You set the conversion ratio between exercise and minutes earned. One pushup to one minute is the default, but scale it up to 3 pushups to a minute in hard mode, or 10 pushups to a minute in warrior mode! We had a blast building this, along the way, we're pretty sure we've built the best exercise detection in the world. And with more than a million pushups logged by users earning their scroll, people seem to agree! Royce and I have seen first hand that changing our habits requires changing our environment. And even though weā€™re spending more of our lives online, our tools for changing our digital environments are incredibly limited. Thatā€™s where we come in. Weā€™ll help you set up a digital environment that is aligned with your goals rather than big techā€™s bottom line. Some other ways we allow you to create your ideal digital environment: - Create scheduled windows where you can freely access apps, (or theyā€™re blocked entirely) - Write notes to yourself that youā€™ll see before every app open - Build your streak each day you stay under your scrolling budget - Add accountability partners who get notified if you break your budget or delete Clearspace. - Turn off social feeds entirely on the web

@mwseibel @andyroamer Great q! It's something we think about a lot. Honestly I think the unique nature of digital habits is that we can automate the moment of "habit intercept". With physical habits (take biting my nails as an example) it's much harder/impossible to automatically interrupt that But with digital habit change, we actually can! It's a beautiful thing and one of the reasons I'm so optimistic about the space. And I am above 1000 - almost 2000 if you count the ones I did to train the AI model on pushup detection!
Royce Branning
@mwseibel @anteloper @andyroamer all users combined have already done over 1 million!
Pradhumn Vijayvargiya
@mwseibel @anteloper woohhhh I am mindblown, wanted something like this. I am spending too much time on the screen and also delaying my plan to workout daily. This will solve two problems simultaneously. Loved it, all the best for launch
Oliver Hill
@mwseibel @prad_vv Thanks so much. Can't wait to have you as a user - feel free to add me to your pushup challenges if you want a little friendly competition!
Kaan Sarac
@mwseibel @anteloper congrats on the launch! just upvoted, and definitely going to give it a try. love the idea of earning scroll time with pushups! best of luck to you and the team!
HackerQED
Installed in the first glance. Gonna be a healthy hacker with your awesome application. Btw, does it support other workouts, like burpees or planks?
Royce Branning
@hackerqed yes! supports squats and steps in addition to pushups at the moment. Burpees and planks possibly to come in the future!
Oliver Hill
@hackerqed Not yet but early support has been overwhelming! Likely new exercises to come soon
Stasia Avramenko
@hackerqed thanks for installing Clearspace right off the bat! Love the idea of becoming a "healthy hacker" with it. As Royce and Oliver mentioned, weā€™re thinking on adding more exercises like burpees and planks, so stay tunedā€”thereā€™s more to come! Let us know how the app helps you stay active in the meantime!
Gabe Perez
Haha I love this idea. My friends and I already text each other to do pushups and such, but this is an awesome idea to encourage the workout habits while reducing screen time. How did you get the body tracking to work? I haven't tampered with that in building yet. Congrats on the launch!
Oliver Hill
@gabe We used CreateML and a lot of elbow grease! I actually thought it was going to be significantly easier than it turned out to be. We first tried a cloud approach which was accurate but way too slow. Had to shift to doing it on-device which turned out to be a great decision once tuned up the model and got it really accurate
Gabe Perez
@anteloper I'm going to have to dive into CreateML and play with it! Don't you love when something that you think is going to be easy turns out to take most of the time TT__TT Pretty cool that this is all able to be handled on-device now. Thanks for sharing and I hope y'all keep building with clearspace or at least with the concept. Really into it.
Royce Branning
@gabe that's awesome, it's such a life hack to build community around fitness goals!
Royce Branning
@anteloper @gabe appreciate the support!
Stasia Avramenko
@gabe, thanks for the support! Itā€™s always great to hear that people are already finding creative ways to balance fitness with screen time. Clearspace is all about making those habits even easier to stick to, and we love that itā€™s resonating with you. The technical side is all magic from our dev team, but what really excites us is seeing how people like you integrate it into their lives and make healthier choices. Keep us posted on how you and your friends use it!

Brij Mohan Lal Srivastava
Wow, this is a very cool idea ! I wonder how to open social media apps in public transportations at rush hour though šŸ˜†
Oliver Hill
@brijs You can "bank" pushups for later! Rep out 100 on Sunday and spend them sparingly throughout the week :)
Stasia Avramenko
@brijs @anteloper banking pushups is a game-changer, and once you get into a rhythm, you'll have plenty stored up for those rush hour social media moments. Let us know how it goesā€”looking forward to hearing about your experience!
Royce Branning
@brijs banking can work...or just be still and enjoy the ride!
Rizky Ge
@mwseibel @anteloper congrats on the launch! I love this idea. Anything what supports sport activities is becoming my fave thing. Goodluck

Nikola Djordjevic
Clearspace is such an innovative way to build healthier digital habits! I love how it turns exercise into a reward for screen time, making it both fun and productive. Congrats on the launch @anteloper !
Royce Branning
@anteloper @djordjevic_nikola yes that's the goal, instead of just saying "no" to screen time, how can we evolve our habits to saying a "better yes" to something else and making intentional decisions!
Oliver Hill
@djordjevic_nikola Appreciate the kind words Nikola. Yes that's exactly the goal. We've also found that having actually earned the break, it's far more enjoyable to use
Stasia Avramenko
@djordjevic_nikola thanks, Nikola! Really appreciate the kind words, weā€™re all about making screen time feel intentional and earned, and itā€™s amazing how much more enjoyable it becomes. Let us know what you think if you give Clearspace a shot!:)
Misna Aira
Wow, this is a real solution for mindless scrolling! Not only does it save your fingers from fatigue, but it also keeps your body healthier. Every time you unlock an app, it's like a mini workout! šŸ’Ŗ. Who's ready to do push-ups just to open their social media?
Oliver Hill
@misnaaaairaaa šŸ™‹ā€ā™‚ļø šŸ™‹ā€ā™‚ļø Ready!! Let me know what you think
Stasia Avramenko
@misnaaaairaaa So true! It turns mindless scrolling into something way more active. Who knew unlocking an app could feel like a mini achievement? We'd love to hear how it goes for you once you give it a tryā€”push-ups at the ready!
Andrew Robinson
Somehow clearspace turns "restrictions" into motivating/fun/empowering features... and in doing so, is ridiculously effective at keeping me off my phone unless I truly want/need to be on it.
Oliver Hill
@andrew_robinson2 Thanks for the kind words Andrew - we're thrilled that Clearspace turns what could feel like "restrictions" into something fun and empowering. These are the details we sweat day in, day out, so very glad it feels that way!
Royce Branning
@andrew_robinson2 glad to hear it andrew!
Joan DeGennaro

Royce Branning
@theriodegennaro wow! incredibly impressive
Kelly Kim
Seems like a fun idea! I think it could be effective for digital detox too, haha. I should recommend this to my friend who's addicted to their mobile phone.
Oliver Hill
@kellypoly Lol we all have one (it's me I'm the friend). Please do! And let her know she can add you as an accountability partner for some added support :)
Stasia Avramenko
@kellypoly thatā€™s the plan! Clearspace is a great way to keep both the scrolling and fitness in check. Definitely let us know how it goes for you and your friendā€”accountability partners make it even more fun!
Maryna Dobrovolska
Looks like a thing that I should try, cause my lifestyle... I need to add some sports, you know. šŸ˜… Congrats with launch and best wishes!

Alex Dulub
This is such a creative and healthy approach to managing screen time, Oliver! How did you come up with the idea to link physical exercise with app usage?
Oliver Hill
@web3_antivirus This actually came from a lunchtime conversation! We were talking about how in general, tech removes friction from processes and we started speculating about areas where this friction removal is more harm than help. Royce floated that having to physically move to access entertainment was probably a net good thing - and removing all friction from that process might have made us unhappier. We started wondering if our lives would be better or worse if we had to do 5 pushups to open our non-utility apps. Once that happened - we couldn't stop ourselves from hacking on an early version of pushup detection, and right from the jump it was pretty obvious that our lives got better
Royce Branning
@web3_antivirus it's a great question!
Teddy Ni
I'm glad we have you guys tackling this problem in society ā€” every launch is so cool & creative. I always look forward to see what's next from clearspace!
Oliver Hill
@teddyni Thanks Teddy! Absolutely likewise - really appreciate the kind words
Royce Branning
@teddyni much appreciated teddy!
Allen
Innovative concept! How do you track the exercises, and can users customize their workout preferences? Excited to see how this changes the way we interact with our apps!
Royce Branning
@allen_xu1130 the exercises are tracked using movement detection software that we built. right now you can only track pushups and squats and then also use the phone's step tracker as well.
Oliver Hill
@allen_xu1130 We use the front facing camera! It is quite intuitive and fun - you can see the screen registering the exercises as you do them. Give it a try! Totally free
Stasia Avramenko
@allen_xu1130 thanks for the kind words! Itā€™s awesome to hear that you're excited about the concept. As Royce and Oliver mentioned, our movement detection is really intuitive and adds a fun element to the experience. While pushups, squats, and steps are available now, weā€™re always thinking about expanding workout options in the future. Weā€™d love to hear your feedback if you give it a go!
Rayyan Jawed

This is nice! Congrats for the biggest invention of the year!! This is perfect for those couch potatoes to exercise before continue scrolling for the only-God-knows how long ^^, I hope it is not just push ups that needed.
