Content marketing and SEO are two of the most impactful acquisition channels for startups, but hiring good/affordable writers is a nightmare.
1. Getting dozens or hundreds of emails, DMs, and comments from candidates across multiple apps
2. Starting conversations with each candidate to learn their rates and other critical information
3. Losing track of conversations and candidates
4. Hiring bad writers with great portfolios and terrible first drafts
5. Doing complete re-writes and spending more time editing than you imagined
6. Missing deadlines
7. Rinse and repeat
I've personally hired hundreds of writers, and helped our community hire hundreds of writers in 2022. It gets easier.

This is a great way of evaluating writers with previous experience writing, portfolios, LinkedIn, etc.
What about when we are looking for experts in a niche that are typically not closely related to writers?
For example, If I go and post a job advert in all the plumbing FB groups, I will receive candidates who are plumbers wanting to make a career change and do not have much prior experience in SEO writing. How do I evaluate these people and get the top 5-10% of candidates when they may not understand what keywords, fluff and topical coverage relate to?
@josh_mitchell3 I would say most plumbing content is written by non-plumbers for a non-plumber audience. I bet you could hire generalists with strong research skills to write this - assuming the audience is non-plumbers.
Keywords / rankings / topical coverage are the SEOs responsibility & eliminating fluff is the editors responsibility!
