No more fiddling with the markup tool in the Photos app to hide a face. Redact your favorite photos with emojis on iOS and protect the privacy of your loved ones. Camouflage automatically detects faces and overlays it with an emoji! The app is completely free to use, but you can upgrade to the PRO version which will allow you to hide the little watermark in the bottom right corner + add up to 6 favorite emojis. This is a one-time payment, all future updates will be free of charge!

What do you think? …

Hello Product Hunt 👋 A few months back I was having a talk with some teachers and noticed they were complaining about the fact that some parents ask that their children are not included on pictures that are being shared on the social media channels of the school. They always needed to manually redact the images and they hated the fact that they were losing so much time with this task. This got me thinking to help them out ... enter Camouflage for iOS! Camouflage is leveraging the power of machine learning (this is a mandatory sentence these days, right?) to detect faces in a picture and lets you redact them with an emoji of choice. All the processing is happening locally on your device with *no* photo data being sent to third-party servers. I hope you like it! Cheers, Frederik

What a creative solution well done. Does Camouflage allow you to pick different emojis for different people in the same picture?

Frederik Jacques

Yes, you can pick any emoji for every head the model has detected!

Congratulations on the launch! 🫡 Love a simple idea like this, most parents I know do this when sharing (e.g. directly on Instagram with the story editor), but I heard that that actually still sends the original image to Meta so the whole idea of not sharing your kid's face with big tech kind of falls apart there. Do you know if that's true? Regardless, this app fixes that 🤌 really cool!

Frederik Jacques

@pieterbeulque Thanks man! It was the perfect app to dip my toes (finally) into SwiftUI after 14 years of UIKit development :D
I'm not aware that Meta would store the original image, but I would not be that surprised 🤣

That's an interesting idea. How does the app perform in group photos where faces might be partially hidden or turned at odd angles?

Juan Smith

I love the creativity here but what if the emoji accidentally covers an important part of the photo like a hand gesture or a key detail ? Is there an easy way to move or adjust the overlay?

Ethan Lennon

This is absolutely brilliant. Can the app handle batch processing for several photos at the same time?

Frederik Jacques

@ethan_lennon That's a good feature request! Will add that in the next version!

What a clever and enjoyable way to tackle privacy issues. The use of emojis adds a fun twist that makes the whole process of protecting privacy feel a lot less boring. Hats off to you for such an innovative idea!
