Long live the age of the telephone. May all emails and meetings become 5-minute calls. Imagine all the time we’d rescue. I’ve definitely had days of back-to-back meetings that could have been replaced with a few targeted calls with the right people. The next time anyone searches for some academic topic online — try a call with an expert instead. Every big company should have something like this for new joiners — meet new people for quick chats over shared interests. How can a small business owner afford not to be on here? Bravo Anyone team!

Normally I love signing up for new services early to try to reserve my handle, but in this case the trade off isn't worth it... I really don't want just anyone to be able to call me, even for five minutes. Calls used to be used to get things done because 1) there wasn't another option 2) you could control access through the security-thru-obscurity of your phone number. Then robocalls came along and only regulation was able to interrupt that nefariousness. Adding myself to world-readable white pages that would allow anyone access to me feels too invasive at this point. Curious why others who sign up might want to invite these kinds of interruptions?

@chrismessina Thanks so much for the thoughtful reflection, Chris! Everyone on Anyone decides when and how they’re available to take calls. You can either go online manually when you feel like it, or set up a recurring schedule for office hours. The social features – Butt Dials and Switchboards – are voluntary and something you opt in to join when you feel like inserting some serendipity into your day. We’ve noticed that users who get a lot of inbound emails and DM’s asking for their time actively ask people to call them on Anyone instead. For some, this frees up time in their calendar – for others, it makes it possible to have conversations that otherwise wouldn’t have happened. For users that are in high demand or have valuable expertise, we’re exploring a marketplace model where you can charge to take calls in specific categories and topics.   Looking forward to get your feedback on the app!

@davidorlic got it — that level of control makes sense, and I already am available to be booked for calls via Superpeer. The original description and promise of the network seems at odds with professional purposes though — and seems similar to dialup.com.

Love the idea of a butt dial! This gives me Lunchclub vibes, but the thing I found difficult about Lunchclub is that it would ask me 'would you like to be connected to a person like this?' as part of it's training and then it would never connect me to that person. So I like the fact that Anyone let's you star profiles for a notification when they're on and using the app. The other thing I also struggled with Lunchclub was that the AI would try to match you to relevant people, but if they weren't available at the time you pre-selected, then you could get matched with some very random people and the conversation struggled as a result. Finding 30mins at the right time to connect with the right people can turn out to be tough, but I can see how it's much easier to find a serendipitous 5mins to connect with someone relevant when you find a moment. Hell this is something I could do on my drive to and from my child's daycare easily! Good work guys, looking forward to being user.

@reha_santiago We've been privileged to have made a lot of great partnerships with existing communities, who were looking for a ways to expand their existing network and stay more connected. We've also always tried to build the product in a way that would help us make meeting the most exciting people easier. Switchboards came from the idea of networking, and how could we rethink it from the ground up in a way that would make better connections in less time. Butt Dial was inspired by old school products like Chat Roulette.

I think a lot of people genuinely wish they could be more accessible to support others – we all have unanswered emails and DM's asking us for our help and advice, but we seldom have time to take all those meetings. Anyone is a great tool to turn those messages into conversations by jumping on a five-minute call.
