CMF Phone 1

A budget-friendly, modular phone from Nothing

CMF, Nothing's stylish budget subbrand, is launching its first phone, the Phone 1. It shares its name and OS with Nothing's original phone but introduces a modular approach to customization. Instead of a new case, you can swap out parts for a whole new phone.

What do you think? …

Okay, it's not as modular as I'd like but the approach is interesting. Why swap a case when you can swap the whole back panel? Alongside that there's an accessory port thing that lets you connect different tools to the back of the phone like a wallet or lanyard. In the US it will be $199 apparently but I've seen it as low as €69 in my country.

You buried the lead here - the fact that this device has been pre-built with hands free voice integration of ChatGPT is significant. When Apple did away w the keyboard it blew everyone's mind. This is a significant step forward to removing another layer of the UX in our devices. Very interested to learn about how much chatGPT can control on the phone 🤖 🤳

I’ve been reading up on the CMF Phone 1, and it sounds like a fantastic option for anyone looking for a budget-friendly, modular phone. This is the first phone from Nothing's stylish budget subbrand, and it shares its name and OS with Nothing's original phone but introduces a cool modular approach to customization. One of the standout features is the ability to swap out parts to customize your phone. The “cases” (though I’d call them shells since they don’t offer extra protection) come in black, orange, blue, and light green, and cost $35 each. You can swap them out easily using a flathead screwdriver. I love the customizations this opens up! For example, I mixed and matched parts from different shells – I kept the black screws and SIM tray from the black shell while installing the orange one and added the blue “dial” and SIM tray from the dark blue shell. It looks pretty slick, in my opinion. While the back is removable, you won’t find interchangeable batteries or better DIY repair options. However, the customization aspect still makes it a unique and attractive option. Given its price and features, the CMF Phone 1 is a screaming good deal. My only concern is the software, considering CMF's slightly iffy track record. But since it uses the same software as the Nothing Phone series, I'm not too worried. I’m definitely looking to try this phone soon. Anyone else excited about the customization options on the CMF Phone 1?

Would this be a good phone to get specifically for the reason of testing android apps on device? I'm an iPhone user but also develop apps for android and been looking to replace my Pixel 3a test device 🤣
