Stop building virtual machines! Start breeding catlets!

Eryph (built on top of Hyper-V) introduces catlets - a new approach to virtual machine management with Windows. A catlet is a close relative of a virtual machine that inherits everything from its parent and is fed with configuration.

Hello,

we launched the eryph App, which adds an easy to use desktop tool to our eryph family.

Eryph?

Ever wished you could create a virtual machine as easily as running a "docker pull" command? Eryph is the tool for you.

We say that eryph lets you turn any Hyper-V host (so Windows only, sorry Linux folks) into a small Infrastructure as a Service. With eryph, you get all the features of an IaaS on your own computer or at least on your own, self-controlled host:

  • Storage management and abstraction

  • Ready to run VMs from images

  • Software Defined Networks (SDN)

  • Configuration injection into VMs

  • Isolated VMs by projects

  • Access security by project

We're calling these virtual machines "catlets," because they can be both cattle and pets, and it sounds like a cat. Everyone likes cats, right? The building blocks of catlets are called genes, which can be shared in a repository called a genepool. The configuration, like passwords and setup commands, is fed into the catlet on first boot, so it's called fodder. All of this comes together to a solution that lets you build a working VM just with a single command like this:

New-catlet -Parent dbosoft/ubuntu-22.04/starter -Name ubph

If you're still with me:

This all is brought to you by our free and source-available eryph-zero (BSL license), our toolchain-friendly Powershell clients, our content sharing repository https://genepool.eryph.io and now even at your fingertips with our first UI tool eryph App.

The eryph App handles the installation of eryph-zero (and other eryph tools).

It also includes a catlet YAML editor with IntelliSense, a wizard for new catlets, and a dashboard to manage the lifecycle of your catlets.

We'd love to hear your feedback. Download the Eryph App and let us know!

@fw_dbosoft This is an awesome concept. A solution that makes it easy to set up a VM as easy as it is to run a "docker pull" (or "podman pull") command is much needed. I just wish it was for Linux. 🙂

Congrats on the launch! I hope to see further development on this project.

@smjburton Hi Scott, many thanks. Yes, Linux support is on our long-term roadmap, but right now we see a lot more room for improvement in the Windows space, where most people using VMs still do a lot of manual work.

The core tool of eryph (eryph-zero, the free single host solution) is actually quite stable and was released late last year to waitlist subscribers. With the release of the eryph App, we are opening it up to everyone - semi-professional and professional users who are not so familiar with command line tools.

@fw_dbosoft Yeah that's fair, I'll keep an eye out for the Linux launch.

This is the first I've heard of eryph or eryph-zero - I'll have to look into them a bit further. The focus on the app is definitely the right approach because I find the GUI interfaces are far more approachable to start and manage VMs than the CLI, unless you want to create a very custom setup.
