My name is Mustafa, I am the Founder and CEO of Astek Diagnostics (astekdx.com). We are building Eugris, a medical device that can determine antibiotic sensitivity in one hour. Problem Each year, 1.7 million Americans develop sepsis, and at least 270,000 lose their lives. The key problems are delayed diagnosis and the mis-prescription of antibiotics. It is estimated that 22% of patients receive the wrong antibiotics. Currently, the gold standard for AST relies on blood culture, and takes 1 to 7 days to deliver results to the clinician. Solution Astek’s first product will be the Eugris, a benchtop analyzer that can identify the presence of a bacterial infection in the blood and then perform AST of the bacterium in one hour. The initial target market for the Eugris will be clinical labs tasked with performing diagnostic tests for patients suspected of bacterial sepsis. This could save thousands of lives per year and stop the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a great threat to humanity.
