Product Guidance with Crowdsourcing & Machine Learning

Here's an inconvenient truth for product lovers: most products fail. This, despite tons of iterations and marketing. McSmartyPants Software crowdsources the market so you know what's wanted beforehand. Iterate and align your product pre-launch.

I can definitely see how this can be useful for testing a product before it hits the market. Getting feedback ahead of a product launch would be a game changer! At what point in the product development would you recommend this for? Pre-launch or earlier? And how long does it normally take from purchase to getting the evaluation?

@kdelaur0 thank you and great questions. This is meant for the stage in product development where you have the idea and the "job to be done" that your product handles, but aren't sure which features will most influence customers. It can also be used to test names, competitors, various pricing structures, and more. Right now, I'm saying it'll take 4 weeks from start to finish for the full report, but as it currently stands it'd be doable within a few days until there's a bigger backlog.

@alexander_moen That sounds awesome! Love the versatility in what you can test for.

🎉🎉🎉 McSmartyPants Software is in the building.
Our software provides product development guidance through crowdsourcing and machine learning.
But, what the heck does that even mean?
Well, let's dig a little deeper.
The problem: most product launches fail. People spend tons of time and energy creating a product, then spend even more iterating and dumping loads into sales and marketing efforts. It really doesn't make sense. By that time, it's already too late.
So, how can we possibly change that dynamic? How do we know we have a product that is going to fit the market?
Well, how about you bring the market in on your development process?
I mean, that's when it's cheapest to iterate (nothing has been locked in), and it'll make your sales and marketing investments that much more effective (because it's something that numerous people said they want).
Entrepreneurs love the idea because they know right off the bat which project is getting a good reaction and which direction to take it.
Product Managers love it because they don't usually have the time or resources to adequately roadmap their product or determine which features to focus on.
So, if you love products (and I think that you do- you're on this website after all), there are two things you can do.
1) For all of those that may have a launch coming up, check out our onboarding and next steps video. Or, for more depth, download our Starter Materials PDF and see what goes in to a product evaluation.
2) For those that are just product lovers, jump over to our website at McSmartyPants.com and sign up for our email list. You'll get access to product evaluations and product news and product trends.
Questions? Let me know! I'm planning on being around the entire launch day.
**PRODUCT HUNT EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNT**
This is a $495 product that comes with a full report after we crowdsource enough potential customers and crunch the numbers. I don't normally like to give discounts and usually only do full price or for free (through contests and giveaways), but for the first 24 hours, you get $200 off with the coupon code PH200
And, if you want the discount but aren't quite ready to utilize it, that's fine. Pay today and you'll keep the full credit until you're ready.
The coupon code is set to automatically expire at 11:59pm PDT on August 2nd, 2021.

Also, I'll be doing a YouTube Live session at 6pm PDT to do a full Q&A on anything and everything related to the product, the business, or anything else that might come up. The link is: https://youtu.be/qMhZCZekQi0. Hope to see you there.

Market fit is so important for a new product. This is a game changer if you can make this process easy for creators.
How large of a group size is your crowdsourcing team able to gather and how do you ensure that the demographic is the same as a product's target market?

ah, thank you for the great questions. The product evaluators come in two types: those that we send and those that the product owner sends. The product owner can send unlimited people. The more they send, the better because oftentimes the product is being built around a customer base that already exists, so we want to maximize their feedback. At the very least, I recommend that they send 25 of their own people (even if they're a solopreneur with no established customer base).
For the customers that we send, it varies, but is at 100 or more.
As for demographics, studies show that demographics only account for about 5% of the explanatory power when it comes to buying a product or not. Those are pretty horrible numbers, yet the idea still persists that it is the best way to predict future outcomes.
So, how do we focus on things? The single best indicator is actually based around past actions. Someone's past actions have the explanatory power between 40-60% for comparison. So, we target largely based on this metric of whether someone has purchased something comparable to your product or not.
A good analogy would be that if you're selling a new car part, you would be vastly better off targeting people who bought car parts in the past rather than, say, every 40 year old male (many of whom may not own cars, or not be mechanically inclined, etc).
We also open up general self-proclaimed potential buyers to participate as well. The great thing about our algorithms is that it ends up separating people based on their calculated willingness to buy. All this means is that no matter where the evaluators come from, "bad" evaluators don't hurt and "good" evaluators give us more and more confidence in which direction to go.

This sounds like an exciting new way to assess product fit before a product launches!

@rachel_tsui1 thank you. That's the hope. Right now most people treat developing their initial products with a whole lot of art and guesswork and not as much treating it as a science. We're here to quantitatively improve the odds of success while saving time and money in the process.

What a useful idea. Could this also be used for pivoting on an existing product, for a re-launch scenario?
Report
Maker
@foohonpie yep, it definitely could be. Although our marketing is geared toward the pre-product launch folks, one of the biggest aspects it focuses on is feature selection. So, deciding which direction to go for future features of a current product could work too.
