Hey everyone! First of all, big thanks to @mwseibel and @ycombinator for hunting us! My name is Benjamin and together with @rune_lohr_hauge I built Mentorcam. We give you access to otherwise inaccessible people for 1-on-1 mentorship and advice on a range of topics from startup fundraising to dating. So what problem are we really solving here?? Access to quality advice from high-profile people is inherently very difficult. Why? If you’re an Olympic gold medal winner, famous musician, or high-profile VC, you don’t have the time, bandwidth, or incentive to give your thoughtful feedback and individually tailored advice to many people at all, let alone to strangers. It’s time-consuming, it’s not lucrative, and it’s risky to engage in these types of interactions 1-on-1. Meanwhile, the people that look up to these public figures are hitting them for advice because, well, why wouldn’t you want advice from those who are the best at what they do? Unfortunately, you probably won’t even get an automated response if you DM them on twitter or send them a cold email. Ok, so now I can suddenly get introduced to and talk to the people I look up to just like that, huh? Yes. By communicating via short, asynchronous video messages on Mentorcam you can access these high-profile people and engage in a private conversation for a fraction of the cost and effort of getting a meeting or a live consulting session (that’s if they’d even do it—hint, most of them won’t). Mentors get to share their knowledge in a way that doesn’t take much of their time, doesn’t require scheduling, and is incredibly lucrative per unit of time invested. Mentees get access to the people that can help solve their problem, don’t have to pay exorbitant fees for advice, and can access their mentors and ask for feedback on the go whenever it’s convenient. So, Cameo for Mentors? Looks like Mentorcam takes a 25% cut of the fees? And, how does this relate to ADPList? The designs seem similar.

@chrismessina We do get the Cameo comparison quite often because of the asynchronous messaging format and we have a similar rev share structure, which is 75/25 as you pointed out. ADPList is specifically focused on design I believe. Our focus is providing access to public figures and other people that are otherwise difficult to access across a range of categories related to personal and professional growth. This is in part why the video messaging format makes sense, it's a lower investment in time, doesn't require scheduling and people are less apprehensive about connecting with someone they don't know from before.

Love the design! Will you be the ones adding mentors to the platform or will there be an option in the future for online applications from mentors? Would love to add to https://servicetoproduct.com/cre... as an option for aspiring mentors.

@generouswork thank you! So far we have handpicked the vast majority of our mentors, but you can actually apply to become a mentor on the app, by navigating to Profile>Help>Become a mentor. If you have any suggestions on others we should reach out to feel free to share. :)

@juan_jose_blanco the interaction with mentors is asynchronous; the user asks a question via video or text on the Mentorcam app and the mentor responds with a recorded video. Thanks to Mentorcam, I was able to seek advice from @chrisyeh. Around 2-month ago, I was wrestling with a tough career-defining question that I couldn't answer on my own. Chris responded within 3 hours while traveling abroad on business. Not only did he answer my question, but he also provided real-life examples that he has faced himself and overcame. Great app!
