Hi Product Hunt! 👋 My co-founder John and I have been pouring our heart and soul into Removaly for the past year and a half and we're finally ready to release it! We're tackling a difficult problem, but are thrilled at what we've been able to accomplish in such a relatively small amount of time (considering we both have full-time jobs, families, etc.) 🌱 How it started After our own personal struggles with online harassment and cyberstalking, we wanted to ensure control over how much of our family’s personal information was freely available online. We were discouraged by the hoops that needed to be jumped through to scrub our own personal information and that's when the idea for Removaly was born! 🤔 The problem No matter who you are, your sensitive personal information is probably out there for anyone to Google. It's surprisingly (and scarily) easy to locate someone if you know a little bit beyond just their name (i.e. a city or state they're located in). That's because entities known as "data brokers" (also referred to as "people search sites") obtain your information and sell it for their own profit. You can request to take your information down yourself, but it's incredibly time consuming (and VERY annoying). 💡 The Solution? Well we created Removaly of course! It automatically scans for where your personal information has been exposed, submits the requests to have your information removed, and then continues scanning to make sure your information stays off of the internet! All without you having to lift a finger! (beyond the initial sign up of course) 💛 Let us know what you think! We’ve built Removaly with the ambition to improve each and every day. First I needed to wait for almost half an hour to get the confirmation link in my inbox. And then, only at the address step, I discover this tool is only for people living in the US?!

@endantwit Hmm well that's odd. Thanks for letting us know, I'll look into that now! And I'm sorry! This is specifically an issue for people in the US due the laws/regulations in the US in regards to data privacy. To my knowledge there aren't data brokers that cover every other country. I apologize that you had to sign up to realize it is for people in the US only. I've noted to make that more clear as we wouldn't want anyone to be taken by surprise while using our site. As a precautionary measure, I'll go ahead and remove any information you've entered as well as your email from our system. @endantwit P.S. We've updated our sign up page to make sure people know BEFORE signing up that this is for US users only. And we've also upgraded our mailing service (higher plan, dedicated IP, etc.) to make sure there isn't any issues with email delivery during times where there's an influx of users. Thanks again for your valued feedback in the early hours of our launch. It was much appreciated and it's because of feedback like yours that Removaly is continually improving! ⭐

That sounds like a great service. Ironically it means I have to give all my sensitive information to Removaly, so you can monitor the web for it, right? Let's hope, Removaly never gets hacked 😬 On the other hand: For Information that has already been out there it is probably a good way.

@heikohaller You kind of hit the nail on the head there. Your information is already out there. So basically you're trusting one company to remove your information from DOZENS of other companies. That being said, you only have to provide the information that you want. So while these data brokers will have your name, aliases, previous addresses, relatives, phone numbers, etc. you can provide just your full name and city/state and we can do most of the work. That said, to get the most accurate results it really is best to give us at least your full name, age, and one full address, but you really can give us as much or as little information as you feel comfortable with. Great thoughts on your question / observations!

excuse my ignorance in order to delete that information the app needs to acess the information so how do we know the this data don't go to the app ?

@ricardo_revi Great question! So your information is out there already. Most likely on a handful (even dozens) of sites. So basically the idea is you're giving your information to a trusted company who is then removing your information from all of the "untrusted" ones. We also never share or sell your data for any reason, while the sites we remove your information from do share and sell your data for a living. Does that help clarify things a bit? Again, great question!

The scan is interesting, it's showing a ton of results that really aren't all that accurate for me. A lot of the sites it is listing, I can't actually find information on myself. I've previously requested that my information is removed from quite a few of these sites. Is Removaly detecting data that these sites may have suppressed/removed? ?makers

@mkaras Hi Mike, I'm not sure how I missed this as I responded to every other question here. I do apologize. **tldr; reach out and I'll give you a year of Removaly for free.** Can you reach out to me (via contact form on the website or Twitter)? It's VERY rare that you would be seeing a ton of results that aren't at all accurate for you. We are comparing these listing based off of your full name, address, phone number, and age when all are provided/given so it's odd this would be happening. Let me know though and I can look into this, John and I usually respond within a few hours at most when contacted via email or our website. To answer your second question, if you already removed your information in the past from these sites, it's not uncommon for your information to reappear (it's actually quite common). Removaly is returning results for a search at the current time so if it found a listing that means it is currently posted on the data brokers website for anyone to access. To be explicit, Removaly does not detect data that has already been suppressed/removed. Again, I'm sorry I missed this initially and I'm very interested to look into this further as this sounds VERY odd. This is the first time since launching (even months later) of something like this happening. I understand this post may be a distant memory, but if you're willing, do reach out so we can look into this. I'll even give you your first year free 👍

For me, feels bloody ironic, sorry. I tried to sign up, waiting for confirmation link then filling up the forms, suddenly I realized that is for USA only...And it says where? No where NOW, where is your remove account button? More than solving the problem, I am pretty sure this app has contribute even more, SIR. Simply by not having a REMOVE ACCOUNT button...

@michael_andreuzza Thanks for the raw honest feedback! We certainly need it! I'm sorry for the surprise on it being for US users only. A few others have pointed that out and we've already noted that as something we need to make more clear on our site BEFORE someone signs up. That said, just send us an email or DM me your username on Twitter and we'll permanently delete your account and any related information IMMEDIATELY. No worries there. Also agreed, that a "REMOVE ACCOUNT" button is something we should have thought about before launching here. We'll take the heat for that one! Thanks again for the great feedback! @michael_andreuzza I thought I had replied to my comment to tell you we made those changes, but I guess not... We updated the UI so that it tells users that this is only for people inside of the US (or that have had a US address in some cases). We've also updated things so that there is "DELETE ACCOUNT" button where any user can permanently delete their account and all related data at the push of a button on their account page (https://secure.removaly.com/account). ^ Those updates happened shortly after I commented on your post. We were more than grateful for the feedback and have made a ton of changes based on the awesome feedback we received on this thread! Once again, much appreciated!

Congratulations for releasing Removaly @kylekrzeski ! I respect the effort and the time you and your team put on this project but, as a developer I would like to ask a question. You're promising me to remove my sensitive information from the internet and that's ok but, removaly.com uses Hotjar and that's scaning me (also records screen video of my session). If you guys are using tools that's not 100% respects my privacy how can I trust you to help me to remove my sensitive information from the internet?

Hi @berkaycubuk, great question! So we do have the Hotjar plugin installed on our WordPress site though we are not actually using it so it's not capturing any information. We set up 2 heatmaps a while back, that registered 1,000 pageviews each, to understand how our visitors were interacting with our landing page to try to optimize our page, but we haven't used it since and weren't planning to use it again - the plugin is still there though so you'd see that on builtwith or whatever tool you used to look into our site. To my understanding though, hotjar does not capture any sensitive personal information of a visitor, it just allows the website owner to understand how their visitors are viewing and using the site. So even though we don't plan to use it again, I'm not sure how using it would mean that we don't respect your privacy. That said, I'll remove it because as I mentioned before, we aren't actually using it anyway and I wouldn't want anyone to feel like we don't 100% respect their privacy, but to be honest I just don't see the connection there. The only reason we used it was to understand how early users were interacting with our landing page so we could make our service more clear to our visitors. Lastly, thanks for bringing this up! It's because of comments like this that Removaly keeps getting better and better! If you have further thoughts though I'm always open to the discussion.
