Startups: Hire a talented developer in a contractor type role Larger Companies: Start an internship program to increase your recruiting pipeline VCs: Connect your portfolio companies with top student talent
My break into tech was via an internship. I'm a big believer in opportunities like this and later in my career I've found working with young, earnest talent particularly enjoyable.
@rrhoover congratulations your hunted startup won on your own platform with 50% less votes and 30% less comments than the second. Our 80 true users have been deleted 1.30 from the end and with support not answering for more than 1h
@gullisc Hi, Guglielmo! I was asleep when you commented. As I mentioned on Twitter, the team replied to your concerns and even gave your product, Rita, a shout out in the newsletter today. Congrats on your launch. :)
How we began:
Techintern.io started during the pandemic when we saw strong software developer students have their internships cancelled. At the same time, certain tech startups were getting a lot of funding and aggressively hiring. We were also inspired by the University of Waterloo's co-op program and hope to bring regular internship opportunities to talented students from all backgrounds.
How it works:
We connect directly with the best student developers interested in working at startups. We source them through our network of club leads at colleges and student organizations. This term we are also expanding to smaller colleges and alternate education programs to open up internship opportunities to everyone, not just students from x, y, or z.
Students opt into companies in hiring rounds about once a month. This way, companies get all their details together so that they can reach out, batch interviews and hire within weeks. We've worked with companies of less than 10 people like AudioFocus, where a more experienced intern taking a contractor-like role was the best fit, all the way up to a multinational tech company like Afterpay.
We see interns as the best way to expand the tech hiring pipeline as well as find passionate builders for your company. It's also a great way to expand your team's horizons with new perspectives.
Please ask us anything about the intern hiring process or projects that might be a good fit for an intern.
How you can get started:
If you're a VC, we'd love to chat! We have worked with VC firms by connecting their portfolio companies to great student talent. Please reach out at kingsong@techintern.io
If you're a tech company or startup, please send us your job role at https://www.techintern.io before March 31 (next Wednesday)!
Report
I connected Kingsong with one of my portfolio companies in the fall and he helped them hire an intern that 10x'd their development speed. Would 100% recommend this to anyone considering it.
Our team loved using the product! We used Techintern to build our first ML infra intern team. We were very happy with the diversity and calibre of candidates available from top universities and work experience at top companies. We closed on a very talented ML infra candidate within a month of onboarding onto the platform 🤯🤯🤯
@smalter Not Kingsong, but happy to share more about our motivations :)
The three of us are all Waterloo alumnus, with myself and Daniel being 2020 Engineering grads, and Kingsong having dropped out to pursue startups. We wanted to recreate the structured system of internship recruiting that Waterloo provides, which we felt was really key to our growth in the space.
It was extremely stressful, but the knowledge that we'd have to work on applying, interviewing, and the works 2 weeks into our school term every term really pushed us to sharpen our skills. We wanted to recreate that structured timeline (without as much of the "get hired or you fail" mentality) for more students to benefit from - beyond just those at Waterloo! That's why we've implemented our hiring cycles in rounds.
I get that it saves a lot of time for companies (instead of needing to go to every single school to source themselves), but it ALSO saves so much time for students. No more needing to go from one site to another to constantly input the same information. 😅
@herenhuang For sure Helen! One of the main reasons we built Techintern.io is so more students don't have to face the barriers to entry that we did, including long application processes. We've tried to make the application process on our site as easy as possible (1 click per app!), so that students don't need to both hunt for hiring startups and then go through the lever.co process many times over :)
This is amazing and I wish I had access to this site when I was in school (barely missed it by a year!). From the student's perspective: finding an internship is not an easy process as you have to apply through multiple sites and manually keep track of all your application status. Great launch, looking forward to how it grows over time!
@gaurab_aryal Appreciate the kind words! We are definitely familiar with the struggles of looking for many startup opportunities and wanted to make the process for students as smooth as possible.
