Gergely Orosz
Hey πŸ‘‹ - I'm excited to launch The Pragmatic Engineer Newsletter. When I became an engineering manager at Uber, my manager told me I should invest in my professional growth on an ongoing basis, and suggested I subscribe to and expense publications that help with this. I searched for online or offline magazines that could help grow, but did not find anything that was specific for engineering leaders at tech companies. In the end, I subscribed to Harvard Business Review, but I felt the contents did not reflect my reality. The approaches felt very removed and more applicable outside engineering. Ironic enough, years later offered to write a post about engineering management, but never even received a response. So I decided to write the weekly newsletter I wish I had when I joined high-growth startups and larger tech companies, and later when I moved into leadership positions. Every week, I go deep on topics from running engineering projects, hiring engineers, the job market in tech, platform teams at high-growth startups and large tech companies, and many more.

Congratulations on your launch! I always love reading your articles, and it's not surprising so many thousands of people are too. So excited to see where this ends up in another 6-12 months :)
Gergely Orosz
@monicalent thanks a lot, Monica! I have topics enough for 24 more months, and that is not counting the suggestions I get from others... let's see where it will be in a year, indeed!
Dan Ni
Congrats on the launch, love everything you put out!
Gergely Orosz
@dan_ni thanks, and same goes for https://tldr.tech!

Gergely's newsletter has helped me to work better with my engineers. I am a Head of Product in Fintech and the insights that Gergely shares have brought a broader perspective to work better and understand my engineering teams. Additionally, Gergely is one of the few leaders sharing views of the European Tech Ecosystem. @gorosz Thanks for what you're doing. Big fan of yours.
Gergely Orosz
@lordserch wow, thanks Sergio! This is very cool as Head of Product is not a target audience I had in mind when writing - love it that you can use to better understand and work with your engineers!!

@gorosz The catch here is I studied Software Engineering in university but became a Product Manager 10+ years ago. So, the cause is close to my heart. Your newsletter and Twitter account has helped me to get updated with relevant Engineering topics and yes, also to understand them better, for example your article about the seniority rollercoaster.
Ahmet Aygun
I've discovered the newsletter couple of weeks ago and really loved. Most of the posts resonate with either my past experience or a story I've heard from colleagues. He shares not only problems but also other people's experiences in big tech companies and suggestions on how to solve those problems. If you're into tech business I'd suggest to subscribe this newsletter and join his community. * Looking forward to read his latest book -> https://thetechresume.com
Gergely Orosz
@ahmetaygun Thanks Ahmet for the feedback. Since The Tech Resume Inside Out I actually wrote two more books: https://blog.pragmaticengineer.c... Writing these books the last year gave actually have me the confidence that I can embark on writing long-form every week.

Engineering manager and paying subscriber here β€” I just cannot recommend The Pragmatic Engineer strongly enough. It's a fantastic resource, and I'd happily pay more money for it. I think the thing I appreciate most is that @gorosz really does go very deep into topics, to the point of sharing (anonymized) concrete resources like project plans, performance review structures, hiring pipelines, team planning documents, etc. There's so much in here that I can directly apply in my own environment. I'm very grateful to have found this newsletter.
Gergely Orosz
@menzenski Appreciate the feedback, Matt, and glad that you can take some of the ideas/approaches and give them a go! Thanks for mentioning the resources, I was wondering how useful those are. My theory is that they could be good ones to start, and you later make your own as you need it.
Matt Menzenski
@gorosz I have been finding the resources very useful. For some things, we have internal resources that I have been comparing to the ones you provide. For other things, we don't yet have internal resources and I've been using yours as a jumping-off-point.
Alex Nederlof
Congrats on the launch! I can highly recommend this newsletter to any engineering manager. It has brought me many insights, actionable advise and even ready-to-go templates you can try in action. Thanks @gorosz for making this newsletter!
Gergely Orosz
@alexnederlof thanks a lot for the feedback, Alex. Glad it's been helpful, and I'll keep at it!
