Hi PHers - I’m excited to have the iOS version of Bar Roulette launched (my first iOS app). After the phenomenal response from my first web-app in August I knew I needed to build native app. I designed and built it myself so it took me a bit longer than expected (seeing as I had to learn Swift…) Bar Roulette combines Uber, Yelp and Foursquare to find a highly rated bar and take you to it. And it’s all without telling you the name of the bar until you arrive! So simple, and so much fun.
I received insightful feedback from users of the web-app and made some changes for the iOS version. The biggest modification was changing the bar search area from the radius around the user’s current location to now allowing users to pick what general region or neighborhood they want to find the bar in. This is great for people who live outside of a city (and want to find a bar in the city) or have a particular neighborhood they want to go to. I also added the ability to choose between Yelp or Foursquare as the source of the bars (don’t let the power go to your head). If you use Foursquare you can filter the bars based on price. Perfect for a cheap date night :)
Please give it a try and send me your feedback! I’ve got a list of features I’d like to add...new ideas are welcome!!
Nice - fun concept and love the safe ride.
Q: What was the motivation behind allowing the user to choose the source of the data? Do users care? Also, on Foursquare, you could allow mood to be some pretty cool tags that they have structured information around.
Congrats man!
Thanks @chrismaddern! I heard from some users that they do have a preference. On my feature list is to add the ability to exclude bars you've checked-in at on Foursquare, so you only get new ones. Completely agree that I could build on the "mood" filter with some fun tags.

@tylerswartz Love the idea of only going to new bars.
Love this concept. Could totally see myself getting a group of buddies for a bar-hopping night to discover new places around the city. Good stuff @tylerswartz!
Cool! Have been using since the web app and it certainly has spiced things up as it breaks my bar routines. Taking the app for a spin tonight.
Question: Does this work all over the world? I feel like I want to use this on my upcoming trip in Europe. Seems like an awesome way to do discovery in a new city where I know nothing about the bar scene.
@colingardiner Yes!! It works anywhere that Uber, Yelp and Foursquare are available. For Europe it looks for an UberPOP first, then the traditional Uber car.
@colingardiner Right now it uses UberX. I'm considering adding the ability to choose the type of Uber you want. This could be a useful feature for groups that want a larger vehicle.
@ivantr0n The bar is selected randomly from the top-rated bars in the area/neighborhood you searched. The number it looks through is dependent on the density of bars in that area and their ratings. Let me know how it goes tomorrow when you try it!
