Congrats on the launch @lanewood! Can you tell us the story of why you decided to create Knock Knock?
Lane Wood
@eriktorenberg Thanks man. We love Product Hunt. Stoked to share our big day with you guys. The story is pretty simple. We wanted to see how much social awkwardness we could remove from initial interactions (forgetting names, not knowing whether to ask for a phone number, wanting to connect but not give out your personal info). How lightweight and fun could that experience be? Could we make it to where you don't even have to take your phone out of your pocket? The potential for this type of product really got us excited. The initial idea was to just make it a contact exchange app... but that was a little boring. We built Knock Knock to be super social. Knock twice and you can see everyone around you and instantly connect with any of them if they knock back. We made is seamless to connect with groups of people at the same time and controlling how you deal out your info to everyone. And of course, all you really want to do even before you swap info is just stay connected (you can chat in the app) and remember where you met (we save all that info for you automatically). College students are really the ones that are meeting new people all the time. They're building an entirely new social graph every day. We're focusing in on that experience right now.

We're incredibly excited to launch Knock Knock today. We'll be rolling out slowly (not available everywhere yet) but with a big splash. We're around to answer any questions you might have! Let us know what you think.

@lanewood Really interesting concept. Totally loved the refreshing design on the app. Just one feedback as of now: it would be much more convenient to auto read activation code using sms/auto activating the app when the person picks up the activation call(something like what whatsapp does to be specific). It might become a little inconvenient for people to remember the 6 digit number. Was able to try it till activation only. Seems like you need an invite code to go further.

@lanewood Love the idea of the Knock! We just launched our version of this today as well http://chatback.co (find us a lot lower on today's list)

Looks cool - what's the story behind your actors in the video?!
Lane Wood
@theezaven All three (Sophia Bush, Richard Branson, will.i.am) are investors. More than that, they're just all-around awesome people. They each have a unique, respected voice and represent 3 diverse audiences that really matter to us. All of them are builders in their own right, and they really got involved in the making of the video.

Great to see Knock Knock here! Not only is this good for connecting, it's also great for reminding you how you connected. It's useful beyond information gathering- it's kind of like the foursquare for meeting people that only you can see.

Neat product! Not sure when or where I would be able to organically use this though. Doesn't make sense to utilize it with friends (already connected) and the onboarding process for a new user is quite long (would be faster to manually connect with a new friend than have them install).
