I’ve been using Obsidian daily for over a year now. There’s no onboarding funnel, no update pop-ups, no pressure to upgrade. It just works, and it keeps working. You let some tools into your life without thinking too hard about it. Obsidian was like that, although I did spend probably an entire week customizing it, iterating upon a template until I figured out how to structure my daily notes versus larger long-term projects. I mean, I was not really just getting into a note-taking app, I was actually looking for a new way to structure my thoughts and create meaningful habits around journaling. I really like that Obsidian doesn't get in the way once you customize it how you like. It's usually the first thing I open in the morning, so I can plan the whole day ahead of me, journal my thoughts, and take notes for my meetings without it being overly complicated.

I've been using Obsidian for the past three years now. I moved over from Bear in order to have a cross platform experience and haven't missed it all. Interface and sync combined with plugins makes for a powerful organization tool and lightweight markdown behind the scenes makes it easy to backup and share notes through the filesystem. There is a small learning curve to get obsidian to work the best for you, however it's more than usable out of the box.

Fantastic. As an engineer and technically savvy person, I've tried and used things for a while like Evernote, notion, and a variety of note tools available for linux. Trying to be able and create a mini/personalized wiki like thing to reference other things I've done but also allow me to do a clean slate. And this allowing me to use markup (comfortable for me) and vi support I'm able to get all of my itches out of the way and focus on content in a way that matters to me. The brain scan stuff is cool but not the real selling point for me just yet anyway. Perhaps once I finish consolidating everything across all the other tools that things have been done I'll be able to see more use for the brain map.

There is a moment in every workflow where you realise a tool is not just useful, it is foundational. Obsidian was that moment for me.

Before making the switch, I was living inside Apple Notes. It worked well enough for quick personal reminders and short captures, but the moment content got complex, the cracks showed. Formatting would break, structure was hard to maintain, and anything I wanted to reference later was buried somewhere with no real logic holding it together. For light personal use, Apple Notes is fine. For building a serious knowledge system, especially one designed to work alongside AI, it simply was not built for that job.

Obsidian was. The difference was immediately clear. The seamless experience it delivers is not accidental. It is the result of a product designed around how information actually connects, rather than just how it gets captured. The folder structure, the linking between notes, the way everything sits in clean readable formats, it all adds up to something that feels genuinely intelligent in its design.

What changed everything for me was realising that Obsidian is not just a note-taking app. It is a notebook for AI. Whenever I need to reference anything inside a conversation with Claude, Codex, or any other model, it is all there, structured and ready. My phone and my Mac both have it installed, and the cloud sync means that wherever I am working from, I am always pulling from the same brain. That freedom to move between devices without losing context is something I did not fully appreciate until I had it.

Obsidian asks you to think about structure from the beginning. You need to decide how you want to organise your folders, how you want to categorise your notes, and what system you are building toward. For someone who enjoys that kind of design thinking, it is one of the most satisfying parts of using the product. For someone who just wants to open an app and start typing without thinking, it might feel like homework at first.

But that structure is also exactly what makes it so powerful. Obsidian rewards the effort you put into it. The more intentionally you build inside it, the more useful it becomes, especially as a knowledge layer that sits beneath everything else you are building with AI. It has become one of those tools I cannot picture working without.

vs Alternatives

Apple Notes

Apple Notes was my previous home, and the comparison tells the whole story. Apple Notes is comfortable, native, and genuinely good for keeping a handful of personal things in one place. But it does not format content well for anything beyond simple text, it has no real folder depth for complex organisation, and it was never designed with AI workflows in mind. Once I started using Obsidian as the backbone of my AI note system, going back to Apple Notes felt like going back to sticky notes on a wall.

What's great

It opens, it works, and it never nags me to upgrade or sign up for anything, which honestly feels rare now. And it bends to however I already think instead of forcing me into someone else's idea of how notes should work.

The flexibility is also the trap. It's so endlessly customizable that I've lost whole afternoons tweaking plugins and themes and calling it "setting up my system" when I was really just avoiding the writing.

I bounced between Apple Notes and Google Keep for a while, and they're both great for quickly jotting something down. But neither one let me actually build anything on top of the notes, so things just piled up and went nowhere.

After I started using Obsidian, my whole way of thinking and working changed.

It is not just a notes app for me anymore. It became the place where I plan, write, connect ideas, structure projects, and keep my brain from scattering across ten different tools.

Then I started taking my Obsidian projects into the IDE, and that moved everything to another level.

In this agentic era, notes are not just notes. They become context. They become instructions. They become project memory. A well-structured vault can guide an AI agent much better than random prompts ever could.

Obsidian gave me the thinking layer. The IDE gave me the execution layer. Together, they turned my ideas into a working system.

The graph view and visual thinking side of Obsidian also had a real effect on me. Seeing ideas connected in space changed the way I organize thoughts. It made planning feel less like filling boxes and more like building a living map of what I am working on.

Since I started using Obsidian, my productivity has gone up massively. I think more clearly, return to old ideas faster, and build long-term projects without losing context.

It has a learning curve, but that is also part of why it is powerful. Obsidian does not force a workflow on you. It gives you the raw material to build your own operating system for thinking.

For anyone who writes, builds, researches, codes, plans, or works with AI agents, Obsidian is one of the rare tools that actually becomes more valuable the longer you use it.

And if you have a noisy mind or struggle with ADHD, OCD, or scattered thoughts, this tool can genuinely help you stay organized.

In Obsidian, notes behave like neurons in the brain, and the links you create between them act like synapses connecting those neurons.

Each note can exist as an independent unit an idea, an article, a memory, or even a quote.
When you link notes together, you’re essentially forming neural connections between ideas.

Over time, this builds an interconnected network of thoughts that functions like a living neural system.
And with Graph View, you can actually visualize this structure a map of your own mind.

Infinitely customizable - if you want to make it an incredibly stripped down snippet collector, Zettelkasten, or series of shower thoughts with nothing but Markdown, you can. If you want to install 60 community plugins and move on to the ones that aren't in the Community store yet, customize it with CSS, and have a widget-y dashboard with buttons and dropdown menus, you can do that too. (I'm somewhere in between.) But more to the point, it's a heck of a lot better than spreading all my notes to myself between 30232340 notepad .txt files in different folders, Notion, Docs and Notes on my phone. Has it fixed the ADHD and the tendency to pick up every new productivity software? Nope, but that's my own issue. Has it greatly helped with consolidating and getting me into a routine? It sure has -- and it also has the really cool bonus of encouraging wikilinks within notes, which scratches a hypertext itch I forgot I had. (Also, there's a really robust TTRPG community within the Obsidian forums/Discord and a whooole subsection of user-made tips for GMs and players, so that's a nice little bonus for those of you into that hobby.)

I’ve been using Obsidian for more than two years, and it really helps me keep track of my notes and build my own knowledge base. I like how flexible it is; the big community of plugins is a huge plus. I also enjoy that I can write my own plugins if needed. Still, I sometimes find it hard to search and find the right note. Also, I don’t really like that I have to use plugins like "MAKE" just to organize my pages. Overall, it’s a powerful and flexible app that I strongly recommend if you want to manage your ideas and knowledge smartly.
