After straight-A's throughout 8 years of classroom French, I went to Paris for the first time in college! I was shocked and mortified when I got off the plane because...I couldn't understand anything people were saying! Yeah, I could read Molière and knew the 'past subjunctive' tense, but I'd somehow never been taught how to have a conversation or even order a croissant...!
