Very very nice project :) I remember when I was like 6 years old, daddy bought me a cassette for Commodore 64 with a software to simulate playing piano, and there was an accessory included with piano keys to put on the C64 keys.
It actually "transformed" the computer into an electronic keyboard, the feeling was different when using it, and it was fun.
So yes, of course cardboard objects can...
