Original content and replying to tweets pays off. But long term any number of followers always turn out to be less. So my best bet on getting exposure would be diversifying the content distribution strategy.
I'm in the 40 followers trap on Twitter, how can I get out of it?

I would be cautious doing that. But, some products are just very huge to risk building on them. Ex: A WhatsApp newsletter tool, a dating extension for twitter. These solutions will be awesome with an API and worth a try w/o API as well because of huge audiences.

For me, most of them happen to arrive while thinking and questioning on a very niche topic of interests. Most of the time the end goal isn't to think of an idea.
