It's now dawned on me how difficult it is to get (active) users. Does anyone have any hints or tips on this?

Listen to the episode of Product Hunt Radio with Courtland Allen - he shares lots of tips. You have to start building your audience before you launch, and keep launching to respond to their feedback.
