Any ideas about how PH did its own marketing in early days?

Many makers here, including myself, rely heavily on PH to introduce our products widely, but what about PH itself? Considering that at the time Product Hunt was founded, social media were not used much for brand promotion as today. So, do you guys have any idea about their promotion strategies?
