Any immigrant/foreigner had trouble getting a credit card in the US?

Hi everyone, I'm a Canadian living in the US and I had trouble getting a credit card when first arriving - due to lack of credit history - although I have a pretty solid one back in Canada. I have a few friends (also Canadian) having the same issue I was wondering what was the experience of others? (Canadian or not) What were your solutions? Cheers
