For this, the team talked to 20+ SEO marketers to understand which SEO tools folks were using the most, why, what they do, how much they cost, etc. The writers are journalists not SEO experts, and they relied on interviews with the experts as well as several surveys.
No surprise, Ahrefs and SEMRush were the most popular (SEMRush over Ahrefs, which was a surprise to me!) –– but one of the SEO marketers even gave a breakdown of which tools to use if you only have $500 to spend a month. They were:
Clearscope for content optimization at $170 a month
SEMRush for weekly check-ins for $120 a month
Ahrefs for deep dives into links and rank for $99 a month
Screaming Frog for technical SEO at $15 a month
Google Analytics for traffic and on-site behavior analysis (free)
SEOquake for rank tracking in a Chrome extension (free)
$404 total a month.
Would y'all agree? Choose different tools? Why?
