Do you set goals for yourself? If yes, are they short-term or long-term?

I set goals for myself both short-term and long-term. I find that having specific goals to work towards helps keep me motivated and focused. Short-term goals give me a sense of accomplishment and help me stay on track day-to-day, while long-term goals provide direction and help me prioritize my time and efforts. What about you? Do you set goals for yourself, and if so, are they short-term or long-term?

I operate by setting up long-term goals, or rather a visions of where I want to be in different aspects of my life in the future. This is what drives me. On day to day basis I operate on a very short-term to-do list to make sure that my journey toward that vision is enjoyable. Ofc there are team Milestones we set up, but that's an entirely different story

We set really specific goals short term (<3 months), such as "upgrade servers to xyz." but long term goals are best left as general as possible

Both! I set short-term goals for this year and long-term ones for 5 years.

I prefer short term over long term because I've noticed there are so many unexpected things that happen in ST that needs me to alter or change LT.

Yes, Like everyone else, I do set both short term and long term goals for myself. It is a different matter that all of them are not accomplished :)

I think having a north star, based on a mission and a vision narrative on the problem you are solving is what you need long term. This will help you with decision-making and staying motivated. We usually maintain detailed planning for the next quarter (3 months window), high-level planning with estimates from 3-9 months, and beyond that only bullet points. The longer you go in a timeframe the more ambiguous and prone to change things are, increasing the risk of throwaway work. Of course, it will depend on the maturity of the organization, the number of people and teams. The bigger the org, the harder to be successful with shorter term spans.

I set them both long and short term, but short term is in the range of months. Long term is years or decades. I find that short term goals that are smaller tend to just get barrelled through by the needs of the day to day and end up being demotivating. Like this I have something to work towards in the next couple of months, that should contribute to where I want to be in the next one or two decades :)

Yes, I always create both short-term and long-term goals for myself, since having a distinct course of action inspires me to work tirelessly toward my objectives.

If you have big plans, then long-term goals. We must understand this from the very childhood when our parents tell us: "build big goals for the future." And this is reminiscent for the child and he becomes more refined plans in the future.

Without a doubt, I'm a big believer in setting goals for myself! I tend to set long-term goals that are big and audacious, but also break them down into smaller short-term goals that I can achieve along the way.
