  • Does Gender-Really Matter (for product)?

Hey friends! 70-80% of our users are women (I guess women just like journaling in general). Would you be more likely to buy something marketed specifically for your gender, or does it not make a difference? Your input will help us decide how to position our launch. Thanks!

I think gender specific marketing can help, but it’s not a dealbreaker for me.

@connor_reid Agree, we might try it out later and focus on the product for now. Thanks for your feedback, Connor!

No context on what your product is beyond journaling so just based on the numbers you provide… If you have 70-80% women then that means 20-30% are men… so probably not a good idea to just market to one gender unless you are trying to pivot completely in to an all women’s product.

@obsolutionai Thanks for your feedback! We've developed a journaling app for self therapy (using psychology-based tools). It was developed by therapists and from their experience mainly women ended up using their product. Though approach works fine for both genders and since we're early on, probably we'll stick to promoting it to both genders. Appreciate your feedback!

@ardak_ sounds awesome! I’ll check it out. I know a few therapists who have asked us about use cases like this that have Ai incorporated in it. Have fun! Give me a follow back😁

Gender matters for some products, but many succeed with a neutral approach.

If the product meets my needs, I don't care how it's marketed.

@olive_knight1 Absolutely! If you're interested in self-therapy through journaling on your own, I'd love to share access with you. Thanks so much for your feedback—it really meant a lot!

Gender. based marketing feels unnecessary to me unless it’s for something really specific.

It's better to focus on the benefits of the product rather than target gender.

It doesn't matter to me as long as the product works well.

For something like journaling, I don’t think gender matters much.

@zoepalmer Thanks for your feedback, Zoe! You're right—journaling is definitely gender-neutral. Since our product is a self-therapy journaling app and we've noticed that more women tend to engage in therapy, we thought there might be a connection.

I think whether gender matters really depends on your target market and product positioning. If 70-80% of your current users are women, you may want to lean into that and tailor the product experience and marketing more towards women. But totally ignoring the 20-30% of men could limit growth. I'd suggest looking at engagement and retention data by gender to see if men are using the product differently or churning at a higher rate. That could inform how much to shift positioning vs keeping it somewhat gender neutral. Also consider surveying users on what appeals to them about the product to see if gender-specific vs neutral value props resonate more. The bottom line is numbers don't lie - follow what the data tells you while being thoughtful about alienating a core user segment. Hope this helps provide a framework to tackle this strategically!
