Focus on core features first - a pretty UI won't save a product that doesn't solve real problems. Think Craigslist vs failed "beautiful" competitors.

minimalist phone: creating folders
Maybe I am too rational, but I prefer something practical rather than something beautiful. Yeah, design makes difference but not I have a look what the product can offer and how it solves my problem. Design is only sparkles and shine around that.
