Go to strategy for generating waitlist signups?

There's a ton of information out there about this, but the main trend at the moment seems to be building in public (#buildinpublic). I'm personally quite bought into @arvidkahl and his idea of an audience driven business and we're taking a lot of inspiration from that even though we're not strictly building in public.
