I'm a long time fan of Douglas Adam's novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. There was an AI android named Marvin - who was so good at predicting things into the future by quintillions calculations with universe's best algorithm loaded inside. I really like its personality - calm, calculative, helpful and best at what it's supposed to do. So when I launched my first startup - I named it after him - Marvin XR :-)
@swapratim_roy That's probably the best story I heard here ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ

@marksachintha thanks my friend

We had a rough 3 step approach: - Used GPT-4 to give us an initial list of 100 names which were 4-5 letters long and ended with O and U. Our other two criteria was that it had to be simple, and should be easy to spell (and hard to misspell). - Once we had an initial list, we shortlisted the 10 that we liked the most. For each of the 10, we checked its domain availability, whether there were any existing trademarks, and how competitive the SEO namespace was. - This eliminated about 8 out of the 10. Then, out of the remaining 2, we picked the one which resonated more with us.
@kkavita That's smart using GPT was a cool move.

@marksachintha It definitely made the 'brainstorming' a lot easier!

@kkavita very brilliant idea to pick name
Well this was tough yea. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ It changed quite a few times. It went from bix, to Bixchat to now Zapmail. We searched around for some names, and we knew we liked the letter Z. At the time, the main thing we could do from the product was mail. So we had a poll with a few names, took a vote from the team, and here we are with Zapmail.
@shaaay Yeah and for some reason this name felt like it's THE NAME.

@shaaay zapmail sounds good ๐Ÿ’ฏ nice one

@marksachintha To be honest I have only used it to brain storm names for some opensource projects. But I feel it generates a lot of ideas etc. like Steve Jobs said: Creativity is just connecting things โœจ
@sentry_co Yes, it's a great tool, love what it does.
@sentry_co Yeah I love the fact that most names are unique, unlike most other naming apps

@marksachintha It's a great question! Tbh, I do not remember clearly how it's come to my mind, but I wanted something playful and unique and we came up with l00kin, where zeros replaced with the eyes emoji and the last letter is missing as it sounds in a speech. Lately, we figure out that eyes amplify the name ๐Ÿ˜‡

Coming up with the name of a startup can be a creative and fun process, but also a challenging one. You want a name that reflects your vision, values, and uniqueness, but also appeals to your target audience and stands out from the competition.
@deluar_001 Yes, and that's what makes it most challenging because you always feel like one of those is missing
Deluar Hosain
@arbaazio I named with the combination of three "vision, values, and uniqueness" one of my startup name is SHAHEB a men fashion shop in Bangladesh. I pick this name from an arabic word 'Shab/Shabab' that's means 'Youth' and in Bangladesh the words meaning of 'SHAHEB' is a very honorable, respectful and good looking man. As my vision is working with youths and this name is very unique and have values in Bangladesh so I named it :)

Absolutely randomly, I relied on associations๐Ÿคซ

Funny enough, I developed a free tool that helps with exactly that ๐Ÿ˜† I always struggled to find cool names for my projects. Tools like Namelix are fun, but they feel more like a gallery of names that you can buy. So, I first used ChatGPT to generate names for me, and then thought, well, I could build a small tool out of it to make the experience nicer and instantly also check the domain availability. This was quite tedious with ChatGPT, because I had to copy and paste the names into a domain checker. You can find it on my profile, launched today ๐Ÿฅณ, or here: https://www.producthunt.com/post...

@derzerstampfer pretty cool - I tired it! Funny how I like and don't like the domain availability search - it finds good names but also shows they're unavailable. lol But good stuff Pau! God bless you!
@derzerstampfer Thank you for sharing, the product is amazing. Love the UI.
Acronyms are a great way to come up with brand names. For eg, even in our case, Wylo stands for what you love. :)
Julien Fayad
My very first business is the one I tried to be creative with the name. The rest were usually very straightforward to what problem they were solving (or to how they solve it)
@julien_fayad Any reason to switch back from creative names to direct ones?
Julien Fayad
@marksachintha having a creative name did not really make much difference on the bottom line. I think this can make a lot of sense for B2C businesses but all the companies I launched/participated in were B2B. I lately made an investment in a company that was B2C which carried a creative name, but that was decided before I joined :-)
Arbaaz
@marksachintha @julien_fayad I agree.. sometimes it is more of a personal itch! :D
Derin ฤฐlkcan Karakoรง
i just thought of 6 letter names that remotely made sense, and checked if the domain was available. Enter Hubalz.
@kahveciderin That's awesome, btw what does your product do?
Arbaaz
@kahveciderin pretty neat! The name gives me Egyptian royal vibes ... ^_^
nice question) we were more about seeking free domain names with some short nice words)
@serhii_uspenskyi Yes finding a short domain is becoming harder and harder even with all the new domain extensions

Your brand name must be unique, never used, must be s.e.o integrated, have many personality and facets. Especially not used on social networks. It's really hard ^^
Apostolos Toptsis
Eros - the greek god of love! We are an influencer marketing platform that helps connect influencers to brands they love! And brands with influencers they love!
@apostolos_toptsis That's a cool name. Love it ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ
Namrata Arya
We built Namify.tech to solve exactly this problem. It not only suggests meaningful names that are actually usable, but also shows domain, social username and trademark availability for each brand name suggestion. Saves makers a crazy amount of time
@namrata_arya Just tried out the product. Wish I knew it before.
Namrata Arya
@marksachintha You can use it for your next big idea :)
Youssef KH
I was in highschool when i got the idea then when i started college i committed to it 01TEK... fast forward a few months i got my first internship once i got paid from it I paid the domain and hosting and it all started from there

Choose a distinct and captivating name that embodies your vision, values, and individuality, while resonating with your target audience and distinguishing you from competitors.
Luigi Goulianos
This time...Just chat gpt and google search.
@luigigoulianos That's cool out of curiosity, what's the name of the startups?
Luigi Goulianos
@marksachintha i Did it for a tool of our startup. The name is Adsnap.
Stan @ ElevateAI
You need a) unique enough so you come up on the 1st page of googling and b) easy enough to remember so people can type it without looking at your biz card. So we have created a list what we think is good and then test it ourselves and on our friends
