How do we make sure that AI doesn't turn into the next crypto/blockchain/AR/VR...Google glass

The current AI phase/craze that we are in is looking a bit too predictable. e.g. here today and gone tomorrow. Or is it just me? There are so many practical uses for this that can change the way we do things for the positive, especially in my field of education. How do we make sure it doesn't just evolve into a marketing term that fades away in a few years? Or are we too late?
