How do you get user feedback as a startup?

While we have users actively engaging with our product, we struggle to receive more comprehensive feedback. Most of what I hear is simply, "It's great."

Being in the early stages and having a small user base, what strategies have you used to gather feedback that can help improve?

Definitely reach out directly to users for candid feedback. Setup user interviews, send surveys, monitor support channels. Ask open-ended questions to uncover their real needs and pain points. The key is having genuine conversations to deeply understand their perspective, not just surface-level answers. Dig deep and keep probing 'why' to get to the heart of what would make your product a must-have for them.

Three way that I see it can be done: a) Easy way - Signup and start participating in Surveycircle and similar platforms. Free to use and works on a leaderboard and points mechanism. b) Medium way - Ask friends, connects, and peers for their feedback. Reachout to some people through cold emails and DMs too. If you have an investor ask them to spread the msg in their portfolio companies. c) Hard Way - Burn some cash and get some individuals/influencers to do the heavy lifting or survey monkey. The key metric here is ROI. Hope it helps!

What I recommend is to avoid questions that might create bias and to steer clear of generic questions like 'Do you like our product?' or 'Would you use it?'. Focus more on understanding what users do, how they behave, and the motivations behind it. I believe the goal of user feedback is to truly understand their needs and problems.

I’m reminded of a classic quote: "People don’t want a quarter-inch drill. They want a quarter-inch hole."
