How important are well designed emails?

How important are they really? I'm talking about both the aesthetics of the emails as well as the content itself.

Any verbal input on this in the comments would also be great.

Very important, especially in this high competition environment. I've heard well drafted emails can have up to 30% open rate.

Being in sales for a long long time, emails that are well designed are important at best because you may be sending the best designed and most thoughtfully crafted email ever... but your target audience may be incorrect.  If you target correctly then the email can be extremely effective regardless of it's quality.  Important of course but putting huge emphasis on it is rather naïve.
