Is there space for an AI companion?

As a millennial, I've been feeling nostalgic about how much simpler things were at the beginning of the internet. I miss those old times when the frontline of communication was a chat screen. With that in mind, I resonate with the idea of an AI companion that brings back that essence, being very simple and fostering good, engaging conversations. It's something I've been missing lately, as people seem to not care as much about connecting through long conversations anymore. What do you think? Does that make sense?
