Starting a side project to raise funds for startup

I know this is a bit crazy and weird but I want to start a side project that will generate money (nothing further to that, just for it to self-sustain with its own revenues) whilst I focus on my main startup idea and use the money generated to support myself financially and to invest into the startup which I can then take it further up the startup chain? Is that a good idea?
