If I were to choose one I would say working too hard on things that aren't aligned with your personal beliefs

@tomitomcat Yes! Values alignment shows up in the research as a cause of burnout. If you don't align with the values of your company, it is super hard to stay motivated for a long period of time.

I would say not working on the right things in the right way. It all goes downhill when you do this. I have been there.

@nicolechaplin I'm curious to hear more about this! Do you think this is individual (ie everyone has a "right things" and "right way" in the way they work) or is it more broad based on the company or overall best practices?
People who are suffering from burnout are commonly overworked, underpaid and lacking in fresh ideas and enthusiasm. They have poor eating habits and unhealthy lifestyle in my opinion.
This is tough to parse, but overall I think people tend to get burnout levels of overwhelm when they're working too much (AND probably not on the right things that light them up).
@mary_clare_odonnell I agree with this. Working too much usually results in a lack of self-care, that's what pushes me into the burnout

@mary_clare_odonnell Agree! Workload is by far the biggest driver of burnout! Prioritization can help, but really we need company leaders to implement sustainable work practices.
The opposite of burnout is being given autonomy and flexibility with an outlet to share ideas and implement changes.
Burnout is nearly always caused by working too hard for too long without giving yourself time for recharging. If you working more than 20 hours a week, you are likely to become more stressed and depressed.
It really depends. For me, working too hard but if it is something I like, I would love to work hard on it! People normally say "Work smarter not harder", but in my case, I believe in working hard. It helps me learn from my mistakes and gradually reflect on some insights from myself.
Lack of time management that leads to poor prioritization
