What is the best way to work towards a promotion at work?

I know it seems simple like "work hard" but are there anything other things I can do to give me an extra push?

There are a few things you can do to help yourself get promoted. One is to learn a new skill that will help you communicate better with higher authority. Another is to be clear about your goals and what you want to achieve. If you can show that you're motivated and have a plan, it will go a long way in helping you get ahead.

Make уour boss aware you want the promotion. It seems quite simple, but expressing your desire for a particular promotion is very helpful. Sometimes management may not know you want it, or has not thought of you as a candidate, especially if it’s outside of your current department. Often management will tell you what you need to do to get the position if they know you want it. Be humble, inquisitive, passionate, and hungry:))
