In simple words, data science is for future - to do 'what if' analysis wheras business intelligence is for present and past - to do 'what happened' analysis.

Both business intelligence and data science are crucial part of data driven organization. Purpose of data science is to explore and analyze complex datasets to discover patterns and get insights out of it. It generally involves predictions and prescriptive models involving assessing historical data and help organizations to take actions. Data science would also require researches, a lot of experimentation while developing algorithms and models. Skills required: python, sql, statistics and maths, machine learning etc On the other data BI provides insights from data to take better business decisions. The main focus is on descriptive analytics to understand what happened in the business and how can we use those trends today. This would require great business knowledge and an ability to translate complex business problems into tech solutions. Skills required: python, sql, bi tools etc
