From an indiehacking/solo perspective: I always try to hedge revenue. That is - to not have "success" defined by the product generating a lot of money or not.
Do I learn something? Does it create something of value even if not a commercial success? Can it generate leads to something else? Can I build something else based on the research/experience that went into the project? And so on.
Hence - even if very little revenue - it was still a worthwhile investment in terms of time and money.
For bigger things, like co-founding a company or taking investment, where more money/time is invested - then money is of course a bigger part of the equation.
