What % of your early stage growth came from sales?

I often read that 99% of new customers come from sales in the early days of building a company when nobody really knows about you. Most companies are successful after years of grinding.
However sales isn't discussed in the startup community anywhere near as often as I'd expect when compared to marketing, digital advertising, SEO, community building, word-of-mouth etc.
For those that have a startup I'm interested to hear how important sales were as an early acquisition channel and how that's changed as you've grown.
