Recently I'm back to the office after nearly 1 year of remote work. Mainly because i really needed in-person interactions. But in general, I also think arranging calls just for a life update is helpful. Work is no fun anymore if colleagues only talk about work related stuff.

@tzuan I agree. We're still working remotely, and I really miss in-person time with my team. We do weekly game sessions and hang out to feel more in touch.

We're using Telegram + Zoom.

@shashcoffe and do you have any scheduled time for socialising off-work?
Alexey Shashkov
@rucha_joshi8 Of course I have it, Rucha.
I work remotely as part of quite a large team (with most of them based in one location elsewhere) and it really makes a big difference having video calls. I'd also advocate organising some fun non-work calls with colleagues because otherwise you miss those coffee/lunch chats you get in an office. I've also done a few evening drinks virtually which have been a lot of fun with some games chucked in :)

@maxwellcdavis Yes, casual video calls with a couple of folks have been very helpful for me to feel connected and as if I am a part of a larger team.

Virtual Cafes by Workfrom
Workfrom virtual spaces for casual meetups and hanging out. They have music, cafe ambience, different audio and video modes, can be personalized and are dedicated. You can connect to YouTube, Spotify or listen to Radio Stations. :) Close the door if you want to use it for private meetings.

@jessica_porec1 What virtual spaces have you used and can recommend?

There are plenty of companies that can organize an interactive game for your team via zoom or any other platform. I heard some teams even play quests or hide&seek games remotely.
Rucha Joshi
Got it. Thanks, that was helpful

@waafsn hide and seek sounds so fun! I wonder how they do it. How do you and your team stay connected?
Nickolay Gavrilev
@rucha_joshi8 our team is relatively small, so it's really easy to stay connected. connection is everything, that's why we hold meetings twice a week. In the beginning of the week we discuss our upcoming tasks, and at the end of the week we talk about what was bad and was good during the work week. The main point here is that connection is everything, but it shouldn't become a routine. To do that, during these meetings, we write down/draw whatever we want on Miro board. With such attitude we don't feel stressed about the meetings.

Video calls with groups are awkward. Unlike regular social situation where a group of 6 can have separate discussions simultaneously, video chats only allow one person at a time. Jackbox games is great for folks to play online with friends with minimal setup.
Rucha Joshi
@edward_g Yep, I agree. Large groups video calls don't engage everyone and hinder any real conversation flow. I'll check out Jackbox. Thanks!

@edward_g Hi! thanks for the Jackbox recommendation! it is pretty neat and fun. My team and I also working on away to make it easier for people to connect with their remote team mates through games but in smaller breakout rooms so the conversation is more meaningful and less awkward.

Communicate often. Communicate when you have ( doubts, questions, feedback, concerns. results or success, update ) schedule.

I really like the practice for acquaintance and communication of employees, which is used by an international company in which my good friend works. This practice assumes that several times a week each employee can spend a certain part of his working time (something about 30 minutes) talking by video with another randomly selected employee from other country. They call it "coffee talk" or something like that :)
