Where does happiness come from?

An interesting statement that I came across the other day. "Did you know that 40% of happiness come from within, in other words, in your control?"

As per Vedas, a person who is not indebted to anyone, who is not in a foreign land, who eats food cooked in his own house even with scanty vegetables is truly happy.

@gaurav_verma10 I would think a person in a foreign land would still be able to find happiness yeah?

@phuong_hoang19 Ask a person who is in a foreign land, does not have their own house and is in debt, is that person happy?

Hmm... I live abroad my whole adulthood. 4 foreign countries to be exact. Of course it has its challenges. Ton of them, but it also equips the individual with different opportunities and growth. I have never been in debt but I have built home and family (community) everywhere I have been. It has enriched my life and personality in ways I could have never experienced if I chose to vegetate in one corner of the world. That's not to say that everyone should leave their home country, but just to affirm that taking a leap of faith to do so doesn't have to end in poverty and struggle.
Great topic @phuong_hoang19!
When looking into this in the past, by far the best book I've read was "The happiness hypothesis" by Jonathan Haidt.
It explains all the (possible) factors influencing your happiness.
Would recommend taking a look :)
@phil_schwengel Thanks for your recommendation! I will look into it!
Happiness comes from peace in mind, and when you stay in the moment.

Happiness is inside you. Happiness is not a state of mind that comes and goes. It is a state of mind you can develop and maintain. It is a state of mind that you choose daily. You start by choosing to be happy, and you practice gratitude. Then you start seeing the best in every situation. You become more optimistic when you practice these principles in your daily life.

@siddhartha_dange Yes, be able to realize your emotions, name them, feel them is what we all need to do to be happy
Happiness comes from within.
It comes from within but to say that it is from within one needs to be around good people and good work
There is no one answer to this question, as it can vary from person to person.
However, many believe that happiness comes from finding meaning in life and taking pride in what we do. We should also try our best to surround ourselves with positive people who will make us happy.
@shreyanshi_gupta1 Yes, I do think so. However, I believe that during the journey of finding meaning in life (which could often be a long one), people could still find happiness.
I definitely agree that happiness comes from inside. Our happiness is determined by what is going inside us.It is a state of mind.Nothing and no one can make us happy if we don't have peace and contentment inside us.
Hmm... I have a feeling that happiness is an exalted form of inner harmony and contentment. And if so, it shouldn't come from anywhere, it just would be always present when we find the right balance within and tear down all the walls blocking us from experiencing it.
Sure, external factors may add or take away from our balance and it's normal. That's why we should always reexamine what we engage with, who has access to us, what we allow and welcome into our reality etc.
@phuong_hoang19 Thanks :) I am glad it added something to your inquiry.
Genuine happiness originates from inside. It results from making informed decisions, such as deciding to be joyful. Although it can be simpler for us to choose happiness when things are going well on the outside, this is not the reason behind it. Even when the world around you is not as you would like it to be, you may still be joyful. When your relationship didn't finish the way you intended it to or when you have a job you despise, you may still be happy. And even when things doesn't go according to your well laid out plan, you may still find happiness.

Authentic happiness comes from within. It comes from making wise choices, including choosing to be happy. True happiness also comes from success. Whatever goal you dreamt of achieving, when you achieve it, that moment of satisfaction is happiness
@akriti_nayal Yes, totally agree with you at your first point. Second point about achieving your goal, I think it brings some happiness, but not long-term happiness because once you achieving one goal, you will immediately set another one.

@phuong_hoang19 Completely agree with you :)
