Why Consumer Apps are very hard to build?

Why most of the entrepreneurs including Y combinators mentors say that Consumer apps and startups are a tarpit ideas. Why people failed in building a consumer Apps startup? Why it's success rate is low? My target is to building something for Consumers. I want to build consumer startups. Give me some suggestions.
