Why do people follow?

I've recently joined Product Hunt. I signed up a few months ago, but I only started actively exploring it about a week ago, so I'm just beginning to understand how it works.
It seems that an user can't post a product on his profile unless it's ready for launch (a sort of "I'm working on that"). The only way to attract followers who will be notified when the product is ready to launch is through the community. So, that's what I'm doing. I engage in topics that interest or challenge me and only talk about my product where it's relevant. Since I'm interested in getting feedback even before the launch, if the topic allows, I also include the product website address. However, I'm wary of being seen as a spammer, so I'm very careful to only do this where it's genuinely relevant.
But is the community truly the only channel to generate interest in a product that hasn't been scheduled for launch, or are there other channels on Product Hunt that I'm missing?

You can talk about your product here, and get traction even though people need to click the link in your profile, or click the link in a discussion. My co founder and I managed to get quite a deal of traffic from here. We’re just now going to create the product here and schedule it for launch

Looking at your profile I just realized I was not using the profile Headline field. So I now filled it so that who visit my profile knows what I'm working on...
Yes, the community engagement is key. You can also leave a link to your product website in your profile where social media links are placed! Don't know how often people actually go there, though.
Besides joining discussions in the comments, you can start your own topics. Some may get attention, some may not. I'm trying to be more active in this aspect too and noticed that broad topics attract more engagement than very specific questions. It's also worth trying to share helpful advice on topics you know well as an expert in a specific field, although I haven't tried this myself yet!
