Why do products with significantly lower upvote/comment count sometimes overtake other products?

I've tried to search for this answer in the PH FAQ but I think it says every vote and comment counts evenly. But what I noticed is that often #1 product of the day has lower upvotes/comments count than #2 or #3. So, I guess upvotes and comments from different users have different value points. Does anyone know what is the basis for this? We plan to launch on ProductHunt in September and I just want to understand how the platform works and how to better prepare for the launch :)
