First of all, huge thanks to @gustaf for hunting us here and supporting our team during the past several months!
I'm Ilia (I-L-I-A), co-founder of Cloudthread. During the past 8 years we were building cloud cost management systems at the companies like EA and Lyft, and are now on the quest to help every engineering team out there achieve ultimate cost efficiency in the cloud☁️💸🧘♀️
☁️ What is it all about?
It is about building in cloud – AWS, GCP, Azure, etc. – and doing it efficiently. Cloud adoption has been going strong for the past decade, and nowadays most software is powered by major cloud providers. Even if you are far from cloud development, but are using some non-free software, you help to pay the developer's cloud bill.
💸 What is wrong with cloud cost efficiency?
Well, in most cases, it is not efficient enough🤷♂️
Many companies still do not have cloud cost management practices in place (paying $$$), and those that do mostly take advantage of discounting mechanisms that cloud providers have (paying $$), while only few - largest cloud users like Lyft or Netflix - invest heavily in optimization building sophisticated cost management systems (paying $).
Why not everyone is as cost efficient as Lyft or Netflix? Two things in play:
1. Getting right cloud cost management processes and analytics is difficult and expensive
2. Cloud spend is not large enough to justify the effort

Our team's domain expertise and the modern data engineering stack allow us to bring cloud cost management processes established at advanced companies to everyone out there.
We’re building an analytics platform delivering low-level unit cost metrics (e.g. $ / query, $ / request, $ / API call) directly to engineering teams. This is the bottom-up cost management approach that makes the difference - equipping those who generate cloud spend with the right analytics.

@jeremy_pownall Yes, yes and yes! That is where we want it to eventually end up! Engineering should have easy and seamless way to integrate cloud cost efficiency into their workflows - in the same way as CPU, memory or storage are currently integrated. Cost is just an another finite resource in the reality of cloud computing. So, head of engineering should definitely be aware of it from the start👆
@legendarylvj Great question, Louis-Victor. We have GCP in our roadmap next, and then move to Azure - pretty standard, I guess, we are also evaluating Snowflake and cost of data space right now.

Common pain point! All the best to the team with Cloudthread, awesome presentation too!
Thoughts/Ideas - something is cheaper/better at AWS, something - at Google, Azure and other niche cloud providers.
Will we be able to hop seamlessly between providers/combine services to minimize costs leveraging real-time rates for different features/microservices?
Will we be able to estimate/minimize carbon footprint from our cumulative cloud utilization?

@ivan_g All great questions, Ivan! In my opinion, in order for all that to happen, more technology development should happen along with demonopolization of cloud economy. While we have few large players our there brutally locking consumers in and earning outrageous margins (8000%😳 ) there is little opportunity for carbon footprint elimination and radical cost decrease. Again, it is all just my personal opinion.

@iliasemenov 8000% is crazy, hope this to be reduced/shared (with Cloudthread!) at some point 0_0 this project seems to make a nice contribution to demonopolization! Recently came across Snowflake - it is not advertised much but they are offering combinations of cloud services from various providers to reduce costs - seems to be one of the big reasons they have customers.
For me it would be super fun to learn carbon footprint from my applications/web-services and would probably affect my design decisions!
I am just brainstorming and this is getting truly exciting, thank you for your insights and inspiration.

Who would you say is the ideal user for your product? is it the Financial side or specifically the engineering side?

@peter_roberge great question and an essential one to make sure you're not leaving any money on the table with your cloud provider! Rate optimization (committed use discounts) analysis isn't our area of focus, but our cost efficiency metrics will immediately convey changes in your committed use structure and we can help you forecast what costs would be with different committed use scenarios
