Passage makes it incredibly easy to implement modern biometric authentication in your web apps. With a few lines of code, your users can quickly and securely authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or any other biometric built into their devices.
Looks good & easy. But you are using WebAuthn under the hood, right? What's the benefit of using your service instead of WebAuthn directly? Could you please describe the benefits?
This is pretty awesome. How do you manage the security - does the fingerprint/facial recognition data remain localised to the device or get sent to your servers?
eventually device biometrics fallsback to device pin . an attacker could simply get in with knowledge of the device pin which is nothing less than a password?
@ourielohayon Good question! That is partially true - an attacker would need both the PIN and access to the device. It's a big security improvement over the broad attacks like brute-forcing or password spraying.
@apobletts that is also partially true. An attacker could just get access to the icloud account remotely (often done by social engineering) and then access anything from any device after restoring the stolen account wihtout needed the original device
@ourielohayon for apple in particular, that will become true with Apple Passkeys. Our goal is to provide a better balance of practical security for users. Happy to chat about it in more detail if you'd like - feel free to reach out to me via email (anna@passage.id)
@stanislav_meshkov Face ID would only work on a device that natively supports it - like an iPhone X+. Touch ID, Windows Hello, and Android fingerprint readers all work too :)
@f6ary Thanks for the question! Passage also provides some account management functionality, so as long as you have access to the original biometrics you signed up with, you would be able to change your email. If you'd like to chat about UX more in depth, feel to free reach out (anna@passage.id).
Great job, Passage. Really love the idea. It's about time someone did this. Quick question: what's your plan for when Auth0 eventually copies your functionality (or will they acquire you? 🤞 )
Hey everyone!
We're so excited to share Passage – biometric authentication built for developers.
Passwords and traditional multi-factor authentication are cumbersome and insecure, and we believe that device biometrics are the future of authentication. Face ID, Windows Hello, etc. offer a secure login option that is effortless to use. There is a ton of complexity around building web apps with this technology, so we built the authentication platform we wished we had. With two lines of code, developers get biometric authentication that reduces user friction and increases conversion rates. Passage provides a web component that can be embedded in any website for complete user authentication. We also have a set of backend libraries that you can use to authenticate requests and manage users on your servers.
With Passage, your users don’t think about passwords, and you don’t think about authentication.
💻 Great for Developers – Modern auth in 5 minutes and two lines of code. Any tech stack.
😄 Great for Users – Register and login in seconds with a quick glance or touch.
📈 Great for Businesses – Increase user conversions by reducing login friction while increasing security.
Passage is completely free to get started, and your first 5000 users are free forever. We’re currently in public beta and would love to hear your feedback and suggestions!
