Hi everyone, Oleks here, maker of BookTuning.
On Friday, Nov 6 we launch the BookTuning Reading Room: a free reading timer in your browser. You light a candle, read in sprints of 15 to 60 minutes (or anything from 5 to 120), and your book's Spotify playlist plays while you read and pauses for breaks. There are rain, fireplace and night-wind soundscapes, 20 pixel-art rooms, and a library card that tracks your pages and reading minutes. No account needed.
Before launch day, I'd love to know how you read:
What do you listen to while reading: a playlist that matches the book, ambient sound, or silence?
How long do you usually read in one sitting?
What would make a reading timer worth opening again tomorrow night?
Hi Product Hunt, I'm Oleks, the maker of BookTuning. If you find rough edges, please tell me about them.
You may know BookTuning as the site that builds a Spotify playlist for the book you're reading. The Reading Room is a different thing: a reading timer. I added it because a playlist alone doesn't help you actually sit down and read, and the thing that does is a block of time with a clear end.
How it works:
Pick a book, light the candle, and read in sprints of 15, 25, 45 or 60 minutes (or anything from 5 to 120), one to four of them, with a 5 or 10-minute break or none.
The candle is the timer. It burns down, the room dims toward evening, and a soft bell ends each sprint.
The book's Spotify playlist plays during sprints and pauses for breaks.
Five soundscapes (rain, fireplace, night wind, a library clock, a starship hum) are generated live in your browser, and there are 20 pixel-art rooms to read in.
When you close the book you note the page you reached and stamp a library card: pages, minutes this week, your pace in pages per hour and a 14-day strip of candles.
Who it's for: people who read a few chapters at a time and like a little ritual around it. Not a gamified productivity app, just a quiet timer.
Things to know before you try it:
It's free and runs in the browser on a phone or a computer, no account needed. Without an account your library card stays on that device.
If you're not signed in to Spotify you may hear previews instead of full tracks.
The Reading Room itself has no ads while you read. The rest of the site shows ads, because that's how I keep it free.
What I'd love to hear:
What sprint length do you actually read in? Is the range right?
What would make you come back to it tomorrow night?
Which room or soundscape is missing?
I read every comment and will answer all of them today. Thank you for looking.
New for launch day, built from a reader's request: Bedtime mode.
A reader in our forum reads for 20 to 60 minutes before sleep and asked for music that fades out on its own, with no timer asking for another sprint. It's live now:
Turn it on under Timer options.
In your last sprint, the background sound (rain, fire, wind) fades to silence over the final 3 minutes.
No chimes. When it ends, the room dims and says good night, with no nudge to read another chapter.
Your session stays saved, so you can note your page in the morning.
One limit: Spotify doesn't let other sites change its volume, so the playlist pauses at the end instead of fading.
What should the Reading Room do next? Tell me here and I'll try to ship it today.
