RecomBuilder.com is a free tool that uses the GPT-3 AI to help write the first draft of a recommendation letter or reference letter for any purpose. It provides useful prompts that get the AI to generate a well-structured letter that covers key points. It is best used as a tool to use by the person who needs a recommendation letter to send to the person writing the recommendation letter to make it easier for them by giving them suggested wording they can start with. The advantage of using this tool over chat AI tools like chatGPT is that it provides structured prompts to collect the right information for the recommendation letter. Here's the story behind Recom Builder: I am a University professor and I am often approached by students who want to apply for jobs or their next degree program, requesting that I write a recommendation letter or reference letter for them. There is quite a bit of inefficiency and friction in this process as I have to ask the student to remind me of which class they had with me, how they performed in the class, and what aspects of their resume or other things they think I should highlight in the recommendation letter. Also, it is much easier to write something if you have a first draft. RecomBuilder.com takes the friction out of this process because I can just ask students to fill out the form on RecomBuilder.com and send me the results that I can immediately use as a first draft. While it was designed with the scenario of students in mind, it is actually a useful tool for all kinds of reference letters for any purpose. In short, it's a tool I built to solve a small problem for myself, but I think it can come in handy for everyone else as well. How I Built It: I used chatGPT to help me write the code for this, and I was surprised that chatGPT even made helpful suggestions for the aesthetic and design in addition to the functionality.
