I've been learning Japanese for a few years now. In my experience, the best way to get good is to immerse yourself in native material. I watch youtube and listen to audiobooks regularly. However, reading and kanji are my weak point. The process of looking up kanji I don't know is the major bottle neck in my reading journey. (my time is limited as I have other obligations). In theory OCR is the ideal solution, but I haven't found a tool that does what I want. Some tools convert the whole page into a text and I can't find what I was looking for. Some tools require you to take a picture of a small region of the page that has the characters you want, and you have to repeat the process for every new word. This tool is designed around my needs. I take a picture of the whole page, and the image is preserved, but I can now point at any word/kanji I don't know and be able to see its reading/meaning right away. It also pins that information to the side margin so I can quickly come back to it again. Basically it's not only an OCR tool but also a reading medium. If you are into Japanese, you should check it out. I hope you find it useful. Some limitations for now: - Does not work on mobile phones - Does not persist images and annotations On the plus side, it's currently open for public testing so it's free to use (for a limited amount of time).
