What’s good PH fam! Thanks for hunting us @kevin 😇
Just over 72 hours ago, we had to shut down our first startup. 😓
We were building a tool that was solving a very nuanced and complex problem and we ran out of time and money before we could create the solution that would help the most users.
In the process of building it, we also struggled with marketing and explaining what our product did...

Founders, Bootstrapping & Part-Time Work
Hi everyone!
Curious to hear the community's thoughts on this. As a fully boot-strapped company, we're having to build the plane while it's flying and try to keep the lights on at home.
That being the case, we're starting to look for and think about part-time work to try and pay the bills.
What are y'alls thoughts on this? What are the upsides (apart from income) and what are the downsides...

@andrewgazdecki this is incredible.
I can't even being to tell you how many PR people and journalists I've spoken to who've told us to reach back out once we've locked in our first round. It was quite surprising to hear that "there was no story" without a raise.
I'm loving what y'all are doing.

What are your "go-to" happiness drivers?
I hate to be captain obvious, but startups and entrepreneurship are f*cking hard.
Sometimes you just have to take a break and do something that makes you happy.
What are your trusted, dependable, go-to things that make you happy and lift your spirits?
Mine is going for a swim. That always makes me happy.

Whats your Founder Tech Stack?
As soon as I left corporate, I realized I was in full control of my workflow and the technologies involved. It's exciting and a bit overwhelming all at once.
After about 7 months of trying and tweaking, this is where I'm at for now:
Shift: For my 4 email accounts - centralizes inboxes so I don't have to find and switch tabs. I can also add other apps like notion or social media....

What's the best community you've joined?
I recently joined "Friends of Lenny's Newsletter" and it is actually one of the first communities I've been a part of that doesn't feel too big or too empty. You have to be a paid subscriber to the newsletter to get access, but it's already worth it imo.

Lessons from Failure
“Like any good school, learning from failure isn’t free. The tuition is paid in discomfort or loss and having to start over. Be glad to pay the cost. There will be no better teacher your career, for your book, for your new venture.” - Ryan Holiday, The Obstacle is the Way
I've been reflecting on this at length after I read it recently.
It’s so easy to have a self-perception as courageous or...

How do you handle family & work balance?
Being a founder requires nearly all of your mental energy and physical time.
How do you stay connected with friends and family, and maintain and even develop healthy relationships?
During the pandemic, my wife and I started doing daily hour-long walks and it's fundamentally changed our relationships.
What's worked for you?

I lost over 60lbs in the last couple of years and the things that have made the biggest difference for me was experimenting with food programs (I've landed on a lowish carb + high protein) + strength training and cardio that works for me (skipping + peloton + cycling) + and journaling, daily walks and at least 7 hours.
How do you stay healthy?

The best places I've found are:
-Keyword based searched on Twitter. i.e., "interest"
-Indie Hacker and specifically Indie Hacker Groups - I just joined a group called "Growth" and learned/validated a shit ton of things
-Capiche: this is a bit smaller of a community, but incredible place to talk all things SaaS

wow. this is a gamechanger. I don't make too many decks any more but spent the first near-decade of my career making 5-10 decks a week. This solves for many of the absolute most painful parts of that process: boring static images, non-transparent images, terrible sharing/collaboration. Great job Canva team
