17 things to do before launching your open source product
Open-sourcing my last app took waayy longer than I expected. Thankfully, I wrote everything I did down. Hopefully this list will save you some headaches during your PH launch prep.
Part I: Cleanup the repo
1. Remove Sensitive Commits
2. Remove large files from git
3. Prevent secrets and large files
4. Reduce commits
5. Remove unused code
6. Fix CI
7. Create an official release
8. Fix security...

š Hey PH! I built Compass b/c I needed a way to combine my "What" with my "Why"; one where I could plan my week but also ensure that my schedule reflected my values.
After 3 months of prototyping and talking to users, I made a huge mistake:
>> I focused on making a calendar <<
I spent so much time building the features we all expect from a calendar that I didn't innovate...

Tips before open-sourcing a project?
I'm getting ready to open source a 2+ year project (a calendar app). I'm trying to make things attractive for potential contributors, so I'm:
- creating a docs site and cleaning up the code.
- letting devs in the niche know via direct outreach
- considering doing a quick & minimal launch here on Product Hunt
Anything else I could be doing to increase the odds of devs finding and using...

How can bootcampers stand out?
What advice would you give recent dev bootcamp grads on how to stand out and get their first dev job?
Bootcamp enrollment has skyrocketed since COVID while the dev market has gotten more competitive. Graduates are looking for ways to de-risk themselves and get that first interview for a junior role.
I bump into a lot of bootcampers around where I live in Minneapolis and they're always...

How many calendars do you have?
As a dev contractor, I'm always juggling work and personal email calendars. I've seen some recent products that simply sync events between various Google Calendar and Office 365 accounts so people can view them in one place.
It seems like a pain point for the power users, but I'm not sure how many other people are out there with this problem.
How many calendars do you have and how do you...

Would also love to connect with other open sourcers. Open-sourcing my weekly planner soon after 2 years of dev. Always looking for OSS lessons learned.

Both great, but I feel like the community on IH is more consistent. I find myself only coming here when I'm close to launching sth š
I'm guessing others are probably doing the same, which makes it feel a little more transactional here

Solo founders: How do you decide what to work on each day?
The biggest adjustment I had after going FT on my latest project was deciding what deserved my attention.
It was easy when I was an employee: I'd just grab something off the backlog and start working.
And it was easy when I had a parter in past projects: we'd spend 10 minutes weighting our options and picking one to prioritize.
But working solo made my judgment susceptible to the whims of...

I like the Loom/Quicktime approach because it's quick. But I'd also recommend editing it, because most people will drop off quickly if it's not snappy or engaging

My favorite is social media listening, because it eliminates the risk that they're just telling me what I want to hear. Seeing their language is helpful for writing copy, too.
Although instead of traditional social media (eg following a hashtag on Twitter), I prefer a private community where I can search on a specific topic (eg Discord, Might Networks)
